Record Rains Flood Canals and Gators Have Fun

Friday morning turned out to be a soupy foggy mess after the record rainfall in many South Florida locations. On my way into West Palm Beach, I had to drive through dense fog that was in creditably thick. Once I got into metro, things cleared out some, but then I had to deal with the flooded roads and parking lots. Yesterday seemed to have a challenge around every corner while on the road. Yeah and traffic….

Then on my way back, the sun was peaking out now and heating the ground up. As I drove along SR98 in central Western Palm Beach County, I started to notice all the Alligators laying along the sides of the road and swollen canal banks trying to warm in the sun. It was so wild! I see gators all the time, but this was crazy! Dozens of them over several miles just out on the banks.
The canal that run along SR98 normally has a 3-4 foot steep bank in which keeps the gators away from the road, and makes it hard for them to climb out. Not on Friday! The record flooding event in Palm Beach County that brought 8.66 inches of rain, flooded the canal systems and leaving the main canals into the Everglades, Lake Okeechobee and Metro South Florida swollen well over the rim. Gators just relaxing, feeding in the sun along the road and bank fields.
I stopped and shot video and photographs and was hissed at a few times for getting to close, but all was good. Crazy day and glad it’s the weekend now.
