Moments In Chasing (6) LP Supercell

Yes.. It’s time for a another “Moments in Chasing” series post since it’s a slow weather day and I have some football to watch later this afternoon. J
Looking back into my 2003 Plains Chase Expedition, I pulled a few images of (LP) low precipitation supercell storms encountered and some large hail. In 2003, we chased a lot of elevated and moisture starved storms during the first half of our trip.
Above you can see one of the supercells we came across in Kansas. This little gem was so compact and low-topped, you would not likely see it more than 20 miles away. It was in a series of small tiny LP storms that developed along a boundary. As the storm matured more, it became more spaceship like, with hard convection and saucer like banding. The convection was tilted as strong wind shear worked on the system.
It was a really cool storm and most of us that chased this storm (maybe 6 total) shot very cool time lapses of this little white spaceship.
We chased several more LP supercells that season, mostly during upslope events along the front range, seeing awesome storm structure and large hail events. The dark supercell above is of a LP storm in southeastern Colorado during May 2003. Another small storm that developed along the front range upslope. Encountered some impressive inflow and hail with this storm.
Saw a lot of large hail this year as well, as seen in this photo of Storm Chaser Jason Foster handing me some Golf Ball size hail stones. This storm started out low precipitation and than became a Classic Supercell, where it produced this hail. Then the storm went (HP) Heavy Precipitation once it tapped into better low level moisture south of Pampa, Texas.
LP storms bring you excellent storm structure along with large hail most of the time, and one of my favorite storms to chase.
