This Moments in Chasing post is looking back to a chase day in 2005 during our Plains Expedition. This was a isolated small mesocyclone at one point in southwestern Oklahoma. During this stage of the storm, it became a nice sunset hailer with vivid lightning before weakening after dark.
As we sat just east of the cell, you could here the “hail roar” slowing coming as the hail core as seen in the photograph, slowly creeps closer towards our location on a Bobs road. The cool sunset sky setting behind the streaks of hail and precipitation with the black base with a fire red glow, made for a nice close to the chase day.
I’ll have to gather some video from this storm and post it to this update in the future so you can hear and see how really awesome this little storm was.
