A fine Florida Sunset, But No Comet McNaught

Oh yeah, just another cloud filled evening on Thursday keeping my forth day in a row far from viewing Comet MaNaught in the western sky. This time the high-level cirrus clouds were gone, but the nice onshore flow of large celled stratocumulus kept me kicking dirt as I scanned the horizon. Early in the day the sky was much more cloud free with the cirrus just about gone and the stratocumulus just off shore the Florida Atlantic coastline.
As we moved into the late afternoon hours, the marine layer clouds started making it well inland, and in some Florida locations, almost to the west coast. ERR! I just was hoping for a wide enough break at sunset to get a glimpse at this show off Comet McNaught. The photographs on SpaceWeather.com are excellent and from all over the world. It’s really impressive to see different vantages of the same event across the globe the last 4-5 days.
I was welcome to another fine Florida sunset, as seen in the photo stills in this blog post. A nice fire orange-red sun ball, setting with the clouds and the waters of Lake Okeechobee. I did shoot another time-lapse of the fireball affect, but have no time to edit this early am. I’m going to try AGAIN tomorrow and hope the stratocumulus stays firm to the coastline. I might even travel north into central Florida if it’s looking more cloud free in that area. Many locations up there as well are very flat with a great view of the western horizon. Eastern morning sunrise views of the comet are out for now as the marine clouds should be around into the weekend. (Things storm chasers do to keep them sane over the winter months)
Weather news: Looking ahead into Sunday and Monday as a vigorous short wave trough will help in the development of a surface low cyclone that will be moving out of the Plains and into the Mississippi and Ohio Valleys. Models are now trending towards a good chance of severe storms with supercells, isolated tornadoes and damaging winds. I’ll be monitoring the models and moisture return to the Gulf states over the weekend. Look for storm coverage here on this blog come Sunday.
Other than all of the above, nothing big to happened here in Florida this weekend weather wise. A return to temperatures in the lower 80s and nice southeasterly breezes. The above front will never make it far into Florida and will wash out well before south Florida. I’ll likely be posting a few “Moments In Chasing” updates this weekend while it’s slow, and before Sundays Mississippi Valley storms.
Have a good Friday.. Wow Friday already?
