A developing ice storm is starting to cause major issues in some of the Plains states this afternoon. Current radar is showing a large area of freezing rain and ice, running from southwest Oklahoma northeast into southern Kansas, much of central and northern Missouri, and starting to begin in Illinois. This latest artic blast of cold temperatures is forecast to remain in the same area’s to see the worst of this ice storm. Freezing rain expected well into the weekend over many of the same location, possibly producing ice accumulations of one quarter to three quarters of a inch.
On the south side of this storm system, there will be heavy rainfall, with severe thunderstorms, hail, and possible tornadoes. This system will work it’s way slowly eastward into the Midwest states and Ohio Valley. A heavy snow event also take place later into the weekend over the northern Midwest and Great Lakes area’s. The northern Plains will remain in bitter cold temperatures through the weekend, with temperatures in the teens with wind chills 20-30 below zero.
I will continue to monitor this latest winter storm over the weekend as things develop. If traveling into the central Plains and Midwest this weekend, expect long delays, and dangerous road conditions. Latest SPC Mesoscale
