Looking ahead to later today, there is a slight risk of severe storms along the Northern Gulf coast states and northern and central Florida. A weak area of low pressure is forecast to develop in the northern Gulf and track northeastward into the southeast. This will setup a warm front boundary over Florida and the northern Gulf coast beaches where thunderstorm development is expected, but remain elevated. Further south in the warmer air and better moisture over Florida, there is a chance of more surface based storms to develop, including a few supercells with a chance of seeing a few tornadoes as well. Damaging winds are also likely with the stronger storms that can develop. Everything rides on how much instability develops during the day and if we can get some good instability, and along with the good wind profiles (shear) already in place, there could be a few impressive storms.

I’ll be sitting this one out unfortunately as I still sit here in the hospital recovering from yesterdays foot surgery and awaiting my discharge on Friday. (see below post) I’m disappointed, but know that I had to get this done now before it became a larger issue later on down the road, and affect my main storm chase season, or hurricane season. Yeah it’s great January is now over, and some severe weather is moving into the picture for today, but I’m sure many more setups will be in my future during this month and into March.

Those visiting central Florida need to watch the weather later this afternoon and local media in case a warning is issued for your area. Most of the central Florida Theme Parks are located in today 5% tornado outlook from the SPC. Play it safe.

I know one person that will be chasing later today and I will monitor him throughout the day and post any updates of interceptions. I’m off now to get some sleep in this horrible hospital bed.
