Weather computer forecast models continue to paint a severe storm weekend from the Plains states eastward to the east coast, with tornadoes, damaging straight-line winds and large hail. Each day we get a better handle on the possible upcoming severe weather outbreak, and more and more it’s looking like not if, but how strong will this setup really be. This could be the first moderate risk setup of 2007, and many could be dealing dangerous weather this weekend. Storm Chasers are already looking into chase plans Friday through Sunday as isolated tornadic storms are looking more possible. A potent upper-level trough will dig out of the Plains starting on Friday and sweep eastward.

Friday, storms are expected to develop in north central Texas, Central Oklahoma and south-central Kansas, and race eastward during the late afternoon into the evening hours. Tornadoes, supercells, hail are looking all more likely in some locations and the threat will become a overnight issues further east into Arkansas and Louisiana. Saturday another round of severe storms is expected, but more in the form of a potent squall line, with embedded rotating storms, and possible tornadoes. Sunday into Monday, the deep south will get it’s share of this storm system as the expected squall line moves eastward. Locations from the Plains eastward to Florida will have their share of severe weather over the weekend.

As we are moving into late February, the severe weather season is slowly starting to become more active with the changing of the winter season to spring. More severe weather events like the one this upcoming weekend over the Plains and Deep South, will become more numerous. If you live in the southern United states, it’s wise to make sure your Alert weather radio is in working order, or make sure you have one if you don’t, especially for the severe weather that could affect your area during the overnight hours. The February 2, 2007 Florida Tornadoes in Lady Lake and the Villages is a prime example on why it’s wise to have a warning system in your home setup while your sleeping. Don’t take the chance.

Storm chasing this weekend is looking more promising, but the storms will be traveling very fast with this fast moving system. We will be in touch with several chasers over the weekend and will update in more detail on any updates from the field. Although once this potent system reaches the southeast states, it will be more of a squall line event, we are still monitoring for possible chase opportunity’s late Sunday and into Monday in AL, GA and Florida.

More to come on this developing weather news as we get closer to the weekend.
