Tornadoes and Supercells Into The Darkness

Well since the weather is slow this week and this is “Storm” “Videographer” dot com, I thought I would put up another storm video. This time were taking a look at a chase day back in May of 2005 in eastern Colorado. We were chasing a Supercell thunderstorm for several hours, with off and on funnels and beefy wall clouds. As we started to get into the darker evening hours, the storm finally started to wrap up one more time as it started to feed on better moisture as we neared the Kansas-Colorado border. It’s always fun chasing a intensifying storm into the dark. J
We had a pretty large caravan of chasers that day with us, maybe about 12 cars. Anyway we all slowly tracked closer to the bears cage of the storm as it started to wrap up into a nice bowl shape. Isolated golf ball hail was falling as we neared the mesocyclone. Once we were just east of it, maybe ½ mile, you could clearly see the strong rotation, with a well developed beavers tail feeding in. It was either going to drop a tornado over the road in front of us or just to the right as it’s slowly moved to the east-northeast. After several minutes of dodging isolated hail wrapping around the storm, it finally developed a weak short-lived tornado right at dark. A nice little cone shape structure slowly faded away into the darkness as we all sat there
watching this rotating convection, burst into a awesome lightning show over the High Plains.
Chasing storms into the night can be very dangerous, and it’s wise to have some good experience before trying it. I though you might enjoy this small video I edited up for this post today. Storm Chasing Supercells Into The Dark Video.
I’m posting this story today early, because I have a full Friday today and have to leave very early and won’t be back until late this afternoon. …Enjoy.
