New Mexico, High Plains, Upper Midwest Storms

This weekend became a very active few days with severe storms, tornadoes, and early chasing for many Storm Chasers in the Southern Plains. Some really nice photo’s and video of the tornadoes over the weekend, including tornado video from New Mexico tornadoes on March 23, 2007. Logan and Clovis New Mexico tornadoes being the main chase reports out of most of the Chasers. Yesterday there was two more tornadoes up along the Colorado and Nebraska border, but I have yet to see any chase reports from the area. The setup was not as impressive as Saturdays storms over the Southern High Plain, but there was a few decent storms to work with.
Today, there is a moderate risk of severe storms over the upper Midwest, with tornadoes, and bow / line segments being the main severe weather threat. There is a nice number of Chasers giving it a go today up there, and I look forward to any reports later this evening. Some of the prime chase target area’s for today, are in some heavily tree locations, so chasing could be a extra effort today for some chasing a Supercell moving at 50mph through the hills and tree’s.
While all this is going on, the normally active Southern states of the Gulf coast and Southeast this time of year are severe weather free. Actually, rain free as high pressure holds strong over the south. Florida continues to deal with a impressive drought, brush fires, and water restrictions. I can’t wash my car, can only water my lawn 2 days week now between 4am - 8am, and no outside fires until further notice. We so need the rain, and we need it now!
There is also a slight risk of severe storms over Southwest Texas this afternoon, but in locations that is almost impossible to chase in due to mountains and lack of roads. Some really impressive Supercells develop in this area and are fun to watch on radar.
So, as the weekend comes to a end, some Storm Chasers have bagged a few early tornadoes now for the stats, and loving the chasing out over the Southern High Plains so early in the season. Congrats!
