Ridge Keeps Florida Dry, Stormy Texas

This has been a pretty slow and boring March, at least for me and the weather. Florida has had no good storm setups in months, and we can’t even get some decent rain to help the drought. The only good thing lately here is the warm weather has returned and looks to stay through until fall. The cold fronts are having a harder time making it this far south now as we near April. Spring is in full swing here and the weather has been excellent if you’re here on Spring Break. Kersten and I were down on the beach the other night after dinner and I noticed how much the ocean waters are starting to warm back up. Before you know it, we’ll have 84F sea surface temperatures and developing Tropical Storms and Hurricanes.
Now that I can see the Florida early spring severe storm window is closing, I’m getting more excited about chasing in the Plains this late Spring. After reading and viewing the tornado video out of New Mexico, and seeing all the storm reports from like Clovis and Logan, New Mexico, Lubbock, Texas and the funnel cloud video all day today on CNN, I’m ready! I’m over this boring slow weather pattern and really need something to chase.
Looks like some isolated severe weather still possible over the south-central U.S. over the next few days. Will be monitoring like always when I have nothing else on my plate weather-wise. I will be in Miami later this morning, and think I’ll head over to Miami Beach for lunch on this awesome warm breezy day. A nice lunch on a beach café sounds like a good plan for the day, plus I can shoot some stock video with all the Spring Breakers and the several events going on.
I really wish things would pick up soon in the weather department, so I can return to documenting “storms” and not having to chit-chat about weather fluff. Cranky Chaser!

While nobody can actually predict the weather….how do you see Hurricane Season for the state of Florida this year? I am also curious as to your opinion of the dike for Lake Okeechobee. Thanks! Michele
Chasers purgatory! Ya gotta love it!

I know, let’s start a boring weather club. We’ll ride around and chase dirt.
As for Michele’s question, doesn’t la nina bode well for an active tropical weather season??? June isn’t too far off…
Start a boring weather club?! Dew, you are a member and didnt even know it.
Yes, we had weather once here in Georgia. Rumor has it we had a winter too, but that is only speculation..I wish this pesky high cirrus would go away! Make for lousy photos…

Michele–
Hard to say yet how things will pan out for the upcoming hurricane season here in Florida. We know that El Nino is weakening and likely will not be a factor this summer.
Still some time to watch, but come May we can start to focus more on the tropics and patterns. Florida I think would of been pretty busy last season if it was not for the sneaky developing El Nino. Might not be so lucky this year.
Once hurricane season gets going, you’ll get a lot of info on this blog covering the tropics. Hurricanes are my first passion.
Boring weather club… lol
I have always been fascinated with weather. Sad to say I became more interested in weather and hurricanes after living in Homestead and witnessing the destruction that Hurricane Andrew did. I was amazed at how certain structures were destroyed and some not. I could not fathom how a house was destroyed and yet….the china cabinet had not been struck or all the little nick-knacks still stood in place. For months and months after Hurricane Andrew I would see something that I had not even noticed before. I did not see my husband much as he works for FPL. I remember leaving work on the Friday before Andrew. I ran over to the Air Station (I worked on the base) to look at the radar for the weekend. Nobody there was concerned about any hurricane at the time. Our passion was and still is boating so I was hoping to get another good weekend out on Elliot Key. That would be a year before we got back out there. Now I follow the weather in the Caribbean because my son is in the Coast Guard. I look forward to your updates during the hurricane season!
Thanks Michele! I lived in Broward County during Hurricane Andrew. What a storm.
Currently watching the ongoing tornado outbreak in the western Plains states tonight.
