Storm Chasers have intercepted several large tornadoes this evening in the Texas Panhandle near the town of Silverton, Texas. The tornadoes continue at this time. The latest news posted at the bottom. - Pre- Post -Currently there are several tornado watches ongoing from Texas to Nebraska. At this time I’m more focused on the Texas, and Oklahoma Panhandle (PDS) Particularly Dangerous Situation Tornado Watch #82. I’m currently also in contact with a group of Storm Chasers awaiting development in the watch area. They are in the Claude, Texas, southeast of Amarillo waiting for growing towers to become the first of the action today. They will be keeping in touch with me as thing get going, and I’ll pass along any information here during the evening tonight. Last word (about 5:14pm ET) Convection was on the increase, with strong backed southeasterly winds, and a well define dryline boundary west of their location. It’ shouldn’t be long before a few cells get going.
Elsewhere, Supercells and a few tornadoes and large hail events are expected further north from western Kansas to Western Nebraska. I’ll try and monitor these locations as well into the evening hours and report any news from the field.
I will be adding short updates to this post below this point instead of creating a new post for each update this evening, so keep check back to this post if your reading in a feed reader. More to come.
Update: 6:17pm et:
Already a impressive Supercell underway near Plainview, Texas. The cell is starting to show strong signs of roations and has a nice V-notch presentation. This developed very close to the Chasers I’m in contact with, so I’m sure they are on this cell now waiting on likely some tornado development in the next 30 mins or so…. stay tuned.
Update: 6:31pm et:
Tornado reported to be on the ground about 10 miles SW of silverton, Texas at this time….moving NNE.

Update: 8:08pm ET:
I just spoke with Eric N and gang and they have been filming a tornad over the last thirty minutes. They say the tornado has gone through several stages, including a large white cone. I could hear the strong inflow winds on the cell phone. THey were on the move again as the storms looks to be wrapping up once again. Very Impressive!

Quite a little early season event… huh? Expecting 3″ hail in the Texas/ Oklahoma panhandle according to the latest TW… I can’t even imagine… but I wish I could.
Yeah - I was just chatting about this with the guys. More of a May setup than late March. Very impressive supercell now ongoing right were they setup… Tornado reported to be on the ground about 10 miles SW of silverton, Texas….moving NNE.
Yep… I see where that is on GR. Very cool. Don’t mean to sound foolish, but could you explain a V-notch to me?
V Notch - A radar reflectivity signature seen as a V-shaped notch in the downwind part of a thunderstorm echo. The V-notch often is seen on supercells, and is thought to be a sign of diverging flow around the main storm updraft (and hence a very strong updraft). This term should not be confused with inflow notch or with enhanced V, although the latter is believed to form by a similar process.

Thanks… I think I saw that too…
Check that rotation north of Floydada…
Yeah - Tornado still being reported on the ground attm. Also storms further north up into KS / NE soon to also crank up.
Texas cells holding. If they start to turn more right here soon it could get ugly for someone.
Is it just me, or is the entire country breaking out in a severe weather event, except for the Southeast???
The Southeast is sitting under a nice ridge now. The return flow of the high pressure over us, is what is feeding the ongoing Tornadic Supercells in Texas and northward. Gotta love pressure and wind.
Meteorology rocks!
It was a rhetorical question… but yes… meteorology ROCKS!
Ugh! I should be looking at plane tickets if the seasons going to crank up early out there. The Texas Caprock is opening the spring chase season for the Texas Boys and Gals nicely today.
Dew, you’re drooling just a wee bit here.
Seems everyone is on the go out west. Looks we are only in for a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms Sunday. I will take what I can get! At least they brought back thunder in the AFD.
Rick
Great coverage of the event, Jeff. Rick, did you say thunder, here? No way! I wonder if I’ll recognize it.
Thanks Dew. Turned out to be much larger of a event than most expected. A lot of large tornadoes likely well documented on film today from what I’m hearing coming in from the Chaser Community. Our guys we that chase with when out there, bagged six tornadoes on the monster Cell east of AMA.
I’m still working the info and my server is taking some traffic attm.
6, for one group… Really an amazing night. With I were there.
Since I’m not htough, I’m headed to bed… I’ll catch up in the morning.
uh, Jeff….I sort of live in the middle of the outbreak - northeast Hemphill County, Texas, Panhandle but am in Little Rock, AR; can you tell me if there is any damage in my neck of the woods?
