Severe Storms Mississippi Valley Today

Once again the central U.S will see some severe weather today from the lower Mississippi Valley, northward to the Great Lakes. There is a moderate risk of severe storms, including Supercells with isolated tornadoes. A upper level trough and a stout mid level jet will help to set off storm later this afternoon. Lucky this trough will blast across the nation over the next 48 hours and then exit the east coast, so day after day of severe weather or flooding is not expected this time around. The best area for tornadoes today looks to be from northern Mississippi northward into much of Illinois, and some of western Indiana. Still isolated tornadoes are possible throughout the slight and moderate risk area’s today, along with wind and large hail events.
There whole upper level trough with expected storms will shift into the eastern United States tomorrow and into the Southeast, where rain is desperately needed. Severe weather is only expected to be isolated if that, as the best upper level support pulls away to the north. Once all this exit’s the east coast, there shouldn’t be any threat of severe storms for a few days, giving the mid sections of the U.S. a break from all the severe weather, flooding and active weather.
Also today Dr William Gray with Colorado State University, will release his spring 2007 Atlantic Basin Hurricane Outlook. I plan to dive into this in more detail this afternoons post. Things are looking like it could be a pretty active season, as a fading El Nino and developing weak La Nina all come into play. I’ll have more on this later this afternoon.
