Florida Receives Rain, Winter Returns To East

Small parts of Florida, including my home, received very welcomed rains overnight last night. A slowly southward moving cold front, along with the west and east coast sea breezes set off a moderate line of thunderstorms that put down some very needed rainfall over central and south Florida. I picked up 0.92 inches of rain here. It rained hard for almost an hour and it was one of the best sounds and smells not encountered here in a while. Spotty locations picked up between a half a inch to over a inch of rain.
This will not in no way help the severe Florida drought in full swing at the moment, but it did help to water some lawns and help prevent some brush fires in some area’s. It was not a widespread precipitation event and a lot of folks didn’t see a drop yesterday. The drought index in many central and south Florida counties, remains in the upper 600s to 700 (extreme). Another long stretch of dry weather expected over the weekend and into next week, so our drought will likely continue to get worst. Stay tuned.
Winter Returns To The East
When looking at the winter precipitation mode on radar yesterday and this morning, it looks more like January with all the falling snow in the Great Lakes and Northeast, and some in the central Plains states as well. Several feet of snow fell over the last few days in and around the Great Lakes and Maine, where a late seasoned strong low pressure system brought back winter to the eastern United States for this weekend. Some locations will have a “white Easter” on Sunday. The chilly weather is expected to dig as far south as Florida.
After the very busy severe weather end to March, Storm Chasers are waiting patiently for the next setup. I myself am really in need of some true thunderstorm action. I know I won’t be getting any at least through this weekend.
I’m off for my daily running around at the coast, so look for more archive chase video post updates over the weekend as the weather news should be slow with the large trough carved out in the east. Have a great weekend!
