Spring severe storm season is now in full swing over the Plains states. On Friday May 4, 2007, another big tornado day over the central Plains from northwest Oklahoma into south-central Kansas, with a few other tornado reports over Colorado, South Dakota and Illinois. Storm Chasers had another busy afternoon (see below) chasing and filming tornadoes. One of these large wedge tornadoes did extensive damage to Greensburg, Kansas before moving into Macksville, Trousdale, St. John and Claflin area’s of Kansas. Reports coming in from the field say that the town of Greensburg has been “wiped out”, with building leveled. (Rated EF-5 )So far there has been eight fatalities reported in Greensburg and many have been injured with casualties being transported to hospitals, as search and rescue continue to search damaged homes. This massive wedge tornado was captured on video as it was backlit from lightning as it moved across the Kansas Plains after dark.

As for today, another big tornado day expected, but this time a tad further to the east over the Plains states. There is a moderate Risk for severe storms with tornadoes, large hail and damaging winds, with Kansas and Nebraska in the hatched tornado threat area for this afternoon and evening. Storm Chasers should be packing the highways in Oklahoma, Kansas and Nebraska, as the weekend opens to Supercells along the dryline.
I’ll be monitoring the severe weather situation throughout the day and will have updates here from the field and from current radar trends.

Scary radar picture. The news is showing some scary tornado video this morning. You pictures from Florida the other day were very impressive too. Glad to see your getting some rain now.
Yeah pretty impressive indeed. Classic hook echo. Also thanks for the comments on the FLorida storms. Been having some fun chasing around the state the last few days. More to come later this afternoon. It reach 97.4F here at my home weather station on friday, so it’s really starting to feel like summer is knocking on the door.
P.S. to Everyone! I’ve added a new plugin feature to my blog where you can reply to each comment in a forum like setting. The link is located in each visitors comment post on the bottom right. I have also added Mybloglog Avatars icons to the comments section to add some personal feel for users. This will allow other people to put some faces with daily commentators. You can sign up with Mybloglog even if you don’t own a blog. Your cion will auto display if your already a Mybloglog user.
This will allow my visitors comments to be more like a community and help keep the convo going. Enjoy!
Love the new comments area. Thanks for adding it. I’m all signed up to mylog blog thingy. I don’t have a blog to share though.
Your welcome! You should start up your own blog. Just a little something wouldn’t hurt to blab in once a week.
Man Jeff that is a very amazing and frightening radar image.
I heard Greensburg had a 20 minute warning which saved hundreds of lives. It was also amazing the lifespan of the supercell. First thing this morning as always I check out the threads over at Storm2k. It was amazing reading and seeing radar images. To make matters worse the same area is in a high risk threat. Conditions ripe for long-tracked strong tornadoes.
Hey KatDaddy - Welcome! Yeah it sure is a frightening radar image of the Greensburg tornadic storm. Was talking with some chasers this morning and they said yesterday was wild.
Today looks like it could be even more widespread with damaging / violent tornadoes. High Risk like you said for the same area’s and a tad east. Looks to be a long afternoon and evening arm chasing today. Can’t wait to get out there.
SPC just popped at PDS Tornado Watch. I feel its going to be another heartbreaking afternoon and evening.
…THIS IS A PARTICULARLY DANGEROUS SITUATION…
DESTRUCTIVE TORNADOES…LARGE HAIL TO 4 INCHES IN DIAMETER…
THUNDERSTORM WIND GUSTS TO 90 MPH…AND DANGEROUS LIGHTNING ARE
POSSIBLE IN THESE AREAS.
DISCUSSION…VERY POTENT TORNADIC SUPERCELL PATTERN IN PLACE ACROSS
WATCH AREA AS AIR MASS IS EXTREMELY UNSTABLE WITH VERY FAVORABLE
SHEAR PROFILES. WITH LITTLE INHIBITION REMAINING ALONG E OF DRY
LINE…STORMS WILL RAPIDLY BECOME SEVERE BY EARLY THIS AFTERNOON WRN
KS INTO SWRN NEB. TORNADIC SUPERCELLS WILL DEVELOP WITH POTENTIAL
FOR LONG TRACK/VIOLENT TORNADOS. AS DRY LINE REMAINS WRN KS THRU
THE AFTERNOON…ADDITIONAL DEVELOPMENT OF TORNADIC SUPERCELLS ARE
LIKELY OFF THE DRY LINE THRU THE EVENING HOURS.
Hey Jeff on a side note the Charley DVD was simply amazing. All you guys did an excellent job. It must have an amazing experience. Jim Edds is crazy! The most up front extreme eyewall video I have ever seen. I have watched it at least 20 times over the past few years. I have shown this to many people. I know what a strong CAT 3 or greater will bring to the Upper TX Coast. I can tell you that 90% of population has no clue. The Charley DVD has brought everyone to the true reality of will happen should we be visted by a powerful hurricane. If Rita would have plowed across the Houston-Galveston Area at 175MPH there would not be much left. It would have been much worse than Charley and that is unimagineable.
Listed below is Flash Macromedia tribute I did for the 2007 hurricane season. If you watch close at the end I highlight you and Jim.

KatDaddy - Hey thanks! Yeah we had one heck of a ride filming Hurricane Charley. There is some video that never made it to the DVD thats pretty intense from Charley.
I’ll take a look at the flash video later tonight…sound cool! Currently monitoring the severe weather over the Plains, and the west coast Florida sea breeze with all the current convection. Busy saturday!
wow what a hook!
This would be agreat opportunity for FEMA to utilize some of the mobile homes that were purchased for the Hurricane Victims and they are still sitting in Hope, Arkansas…
John - Welcome to the blog! I agree with you 100% Those affected by tornadoes not only yesterday, but over the last month really could use those FEMA mobile homes. It’s Unacceptable that these trailers are just sitting here when real people in need could be living in them.
Thanks for the comment…
Just a reminder that I was testing the new comments plugin and everything looks to be working eh ok. Thanks for dealing with my blog server tweaking today. Now back to regular storm watching. Tornado Outbreak just about to get underway in the Plains states attm.
So much happens when you miss a day. I am so out of the loop. Thanks for bringing me up to speed. Wow! Incredible hook there… I was saddened to learn of the devastation in Greensburg and the terribly unfortunate loss of life.
I was pretty excited to see that Mel caught that one. Just another reason to be that much more excited about June. Watch out plains, I’m on my way!!
Welcome back Dew to the weather world. Miss Dew out of the radar loop for sure.
Yes the Greensburg tornado event is very sad. The images of the widespread damage path are hard to look at.
i think so to
I was in my basement in Greensburg and didn’t actually see it… Thanks for the pictures, I can’t believe so many of us survived this… I have a few pictures of the aftermath at my blog, if you are interested…
We wired the new church there in Greensburg. It was called the Lighthouse (Assembly of God). Is there any chance you have a picture of the church. If so, that would be great to see it now. I’ll watch your blogsite.

My house was right behind the high school my grandmas house was really really bad nothing was left standing exept for the kitchen walls…my mom saved a couple pots and pans but thats maniley it!! I really miss my friends there!!! I wish it never hapend!!!!!!!!!!!
hi
are you gonna put this storm on dvd to sell ,,,
I was in the northern end of the system when it got up near Great Bend. I was working at the time - in a long term care facility. We were in warnings from 9:30 til 3am. My husband never gets scared of storms - and he was scared in this one.
Then the next day, it happened again.
Needless to say, this year’s beginning to twister season is one of the main reasons I now live in Alaska
Thanks for the storm story Kirsten.
To all the people in Greensburg, I’m sorry. I know many of you loved it and called it your home. But, if you have children, grab them and you will be cheered up by my site. http://singinggirls.spaces.live.com/
