Subtropical Storm Andrea? Recon En Route Now

I was up early this morning, as I don’t like to wake to big changes when something is active in the western Atlantic. The current non-tropical low pressure gale storm off of northeast Florida and the Carolina’s, believe it or not, is actually looking a tad more organized early this morning. Deeper convection has increased overnight, with some more established banding. The center of the circulation is still open and void of deep convection, but that’s kind of typical of a subtropical type storm, so this might have the possibility of becoming subtropical. The convection is though getting closer with time to the center if you watch a long 12 hour sat loop. It’s going to run out of water here in the next 24 hours, so if it’s going to do it, it needs to soon. The National Hurricane Center currently has a recon flight en-route to get a better look at the structure of this system, and sample the wind field. They should be in the area shortly.
Bring On The Tropical Storm, What Did He Just Say?
A weak subtropical to tropical storm, would be great news for the Southeast US and Florida. A subtropical to tropical system has deeper convection and moisture with it, making for heavy rains, which is desperately needed in those area due to ongoing large wildfires, and the severe drought conditions. I talked about this several weeks ago in a post, Florida Needs A Hurricane Right About Now. A slow moving, weakening subtropical or tropical low pressure system would dump some nicely needed rainfall. So I like to see that convection is on the increase this morning, because this mean some one is going to get more than just some light sprinkles in the wrap-around precipitation.

I have a busy morning ahead, so if for some chance they upgrade this system to Subtropical Andrea status, I might not get it updated here until after the midday hour. I will though keep update to date on this more later this afternoon. I just might have to take a drive to Jacksonville for some early cyclone playing fun. Only a weather geek would go after something so weak. Will they find a warm core, or semi-warm core system? More later today, have a good Wednesday folks.

Geek and proud of it!!! I’m watching you watch this system.
I think its fasnating and i’m praying it does give us the much needed rain.
I think mother nature has a plan.
LOL Thanks Jess. Wish she would hold together.
Talk about answered prayers, an Atlantic subtrop. formed off the coast of the Carolinas in early May. That’s nothing but answered prayers! Bring on the heavy rains… we are ready!!!
It might have just been a precip tease! Andrea is just a spring breaker tease handing around the FLorida beaches flirting with all the surfers with her wave machine.
I just wish it were a little closer to the Northern end of the Carolinas, I would likely be going down to investigate myself.
As mentioned in your blog Jeff, I dought the system is going to hold together longer than 24 - 36 hours, since landfall, and other factors look to take their normal coarse of action. It’s rare to see a subtropical system hold very long.
Yeah J - Don’t think she’s worth the $3.00 gas right now. The season’s early - oh wait! It has not even started! LOL
I think the smoke is getting to me but I dreamed last night that Andrea miraculously sucked up a bunch of Atlantic ocean water and converted it to fresh water. Then she parked her rotating butt over south Georgia and north Florida for a couple of weeks dumping inches and inches of rain. Seriously, I wish it could somehow draw in all that moisture sitting to the east of it and then bring it into the areas that need it so desperately. The fire in Bradford County was as close as three miles to me on Monday night and last night, we were sandwiched in between it and the one in Baker County and getting an an “ash” rain…our eyes were burning and we couldn’t stay outside without choking…we could use every single drop of rain we can get…Jeff, don’t you have a pretty good repore with Mother Nature?
Yeah mother nature and I get along ok. She played though with my emotions all last season.
The smoke here too is really bad the last 48 hours. The large wilfires now in the southwest Florida area, is sending a ton of thick smoke here. Southeast Florida metro was getting it the worst. It’s getting bad.
Gary, Incredible dream… hope it soon comes true… the rain part, pretty sure Andrea’s not got that in her… unfortunately.
Just getting in all. I just came in from being on the coast again today, where Andrea is producing some of the best looking surf in 10 years along the Florid east coast. Winds are light, offshore, the the swell remains high. Veru clean sets this afternoon in deep blue ocean waters.
Major beach erosion has taken place, and some structure were being pulled into the water, made for some scary video.
I’ll catch up with everyone in a bit.
Jeff,
If you plan to chase Andrea into the NE, let me know…I have a place for you in Jacksonville (not on the beach, though).
Jay
Hey Jay! Thanks for the offer! Always great to know of pads to crash at during a cane chase. I only wish she was wrapping up and deepening so I could take you up on that offer. These tropical cyclones will raise you stress level everytime.
It’s…..[insert dramatic music]…..global warming!
I don’t know about you, Jeff, but this is THE most bizarre progression of a tropical storm from a cold core system I’ve seen…mainly it being early May still. I didn’t think the SSTs were warm enough. Shows ya what i know.
This will be fun to watch.
Love the dramatic tunes - I see Al Gore releasing a new DVD on Andrea, and can see the Oprah promo’s already.
Yeah Steve, she’s a strange one at that. What a waste of a good sexy hurricane name. She could of been a raging cat 4 in the western Atlantic, giving all kinds of satellite eyewall eye candy, but instead, there’s this thing trying to act like she from the tropics.
Man I need to get some Plains chasing in first before I let these female tropical cyclones get me crazy.
LOL!! A “Poser” storm?
You guys kill me.
Wait until the real tropical action starts. LOL!
Andrea showing her naked swirl for all to see on 1km vis this morning… now thats not lady like!
Doggone STD…
LOL Miss Sub-Tropical Depression Andrea.
Check out this loop of Andrea.
