Storm Chasing Tornado Alley, Whens The Next Setup?

Normally I would be out in Tornado Alley about this time, as much of the month of May would be my annual chase season expedition. The last two years, I have opted not to take these long three week dedicated trips, as in 2006 much of May was ridged with no decent weather patterns for severe storm chasing. This year I’m doing the same, and here we are in mid May, when many times in the past, I’d be chasing a tornadic Supercell in the southern or central Plains. My 9 years chasing on the Great Plains has been wonderful, but I think I’m going to do smaller trips out west this year and possibly next year as well and wait for the better setups.
With the cost of fuel, motel rooms, food, and rental cars, sitting out on the Plains under a high pressure ridge is just not affordable anymore. Back in the days, you could get away with it better, and find something to do during your downtime, but now your just spending about a $100.00 a day doing nothing if your just holding up in a small town. With fuel over $3.00 a gallon now, you really need to know that your heading out for a show and not a bustola.
I hope things change around out west soon, so I can try and play a few setups along the dryline before the 2007 Hurricane season kicks in. I’m now smacking myself around a bit, as I passed on several big shows in April, and came very close to boarding a plane at the last minute, but thought, “May is almost here- hold out”. Instead I just watched from the computer chair, sitting here in Florida, during our severe drought blogging about it all. Ahh… what can you do…
Anyways - with Hurricane season approaching fast, and with me having obligations this hurricane season in the Florida TV market, my time will be limited come mid to late June. So, waiting to see how things turn around out in Tornado Alley for any prospects of me chasing Supercells over the wide open beautiful Great Plains, USA.
I must squeeze in one good chaseable setup!

Nice photo.
Thank you
Love mammatus shot! Mammatus are actually my favorite. Very cool. Don’t beat yourself up about missing the early season. Who knew? Really, who would have expected that?
Tropical season can’t get here soon enough…
Thanks Jenn - Yeah I love mammatus too. I love it when it’s being lit by a setting sun. Cool stuff!
