Severe Storm Rocks South-Central Florida

First off, let me start be saying it’s great that were receiving rains like we have had over the last week. Picked up another 1.46 inches during last nights severe storm that moved through the area. I was just getting back into town when I saw the hard rock convection blasting upwards northwest of Okeechobee, FL. You could clearly see that the east coast sea breeze pushed well inland and was now interacting with the west coast sea breeze. A pretty impressive collision of these boundaries took place just northwest of here.
Soon after a storm to severe storm developed and started moving southeast back towards the downtown area and my home. The hail core stood out nicely with a nice greenish hue to the sky. I knew a nice little straight-line wind event with some hail was on the way. I didn’t have my video camera with me at the time, but did have my digital SLR handy, so shot off what I could.

Once the hail and strong winds over took my location, I pull into a gas station while the worst of the hail was falling. The hail at my location was about quarter size, with maybe a little large isolated stones here and there. Had a few moments of mini white outs with the blasting hail and rain as the winds likely reached 55mph or so. It was already dark, and the lightning was very, and I mean very intense. It sure was putting on a true Florida style lightning show. Continuous CG’s - cloud-to-ground lightning. All I wanted was the hail and rain to let up some so I could get out and shoot some lightning photography, but by the time it did, the storm was already weakening fast.
So, interesting evening for sure, and loving all this pulse storm action lately. Nice to see our rainy season is trying it’s hardest to get going. Ridge building in now, so time to go maintain my returning to green lawn. Have a great weekend folks.

I will be interested to see how my daughter’s video turned out- since we were stupid enough to try out her new video camera.
Cool! Post a link to it if you get it online.
Jeff- is it true that hail preceeds a tornado? Is last nights weather pattern going to repeat itself tonight?
Yes sometimes hail can be encountered before the tornado as hail sometimes wraps around the tornadic and meso.
There shouldn’t be any severe storms in central Florida at least the next few days. Strong onshore flow at the time with a nice stout high pressure system.
Thats cool! We Have two Michele’s leaving comments! One in the Okeechobee and another in Orlando. It’s funny… I have to look at your Ip address to see which Michele is posting. LOL
I ment to add Okeechobee to my name
