Interesting things trying to develop down in the northwestern Caribbean Sea early this afternoon. A weak area of low pressure continues to develop southwest of the western Tip of Cuba. Although not expected to become tropical as of now, there is a small chance it could over the next day or two as it slowly drifts northward into the Gulf of Mexico. Could this be Tropical Storm Barry, or just remain a non-tropical low / hybrid system? Here is a special tropical disturbance statement just released moments ago from the National Hurricane Center in Miami, Florida.

1150 AM EDT THU MAY 31 2007

SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS IN THE NORTHWESTERN CARIBBEAN SEA… SOUTHEASTERN GULF OF MEXICO AND ADJACENT LAND AREAS ARE ASSOCIATED WITH A BROAD AREA OF LOW PRESSURE CENTERED ABOUT 75 MILES SOUTHEAST OF COZUMEL MEXICO. ALTHOUGH THIS SYSTEM HAS SOME POTENTIAL FOR TROPICAL DEVELOPMENT OVER THE NEXT DAY OR SO…THE LOW IS EXPECTED TO MOVE SLOWLY NORTHWARD INTO THE SOUTHERN GULF OF MEXICO WHERE ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS WOULD LIKELY FAVOR FURTHER DEVELOPMENT AS A NON-TROPICAL LOW. REGARDLESS OF DEVELOPMENT…THIS SYSTEM SHOULD BRING HEAVY RAINS ACROSS WESTERN CUBA AND SOUTHERN FLORIDA OVER THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS. Satellite presentations this morning had me a tad interested in the system and I plan to continue to monitor it for possible development. Either way, it is expected to bring extremely much needed heavy rainfall to drought stricken Florida. I’ll keep you posted. Hurricane season begins tomorrow.
