While South Florida on Friday was enjoying heavy rains from the upper-level low that was bringing much needed drought busting rainfall, central Florida was picture perfect for a space shuttle launch. I headed up to Cape Canaveral, Florida for the launch of Space Shuttle STS-117 Atlantis. I brought my mother and her boyfriend for their first space shuttle launch, and we setup along the Banana River causeway on the west side of the Cape. The weather was excellent, with light winds, and clear blue skies over the launch pad. The place was packed with thousands of viewers from all over the world, as many visitors to the Orlando theme parks head over for launches.
The launch was perfect, and very impressive as you can see in my pictures and video clip of the launch. The space shuttle looked so cool with the backdrop of the deep blue sky, with the smoke trail and fireball blasting into the evening Florida sky. I always get that lump in the throat feeling when watching shuttle launch, as everyone cheers on the blast off. Also see this interesting picture after the launch of a wild smoke cloud tail.
Made for a great end to the week.
