Sea Breeze Thunderstorms Over Florida

The Florida sea breeze thunderstorm season is truly underway now, and this past weekend was pretty active. Friday and Sunday were the two most active days over the weekend with sea breeze convergence thunderstorms. North-central Florida, around the theme parks and southward, saw some impressive strong pulse storms on Sunday, with some small hail, microburst winds, and some typical Florida style shelf clouds, like the one in this picture.
SEVERAL STRONG AND A FEW PULSE SEVERE LATE AFTN/EARLY EVE STORMS IN EC FL WITH NUMEROUS BOUNDARY COLLISIONS…DRY AIR ALOFT AND SOME VORT ENERGY ROTATING AROUND PERIPHERY OF U/L RIDGE.
It’s looking like the wet pattern will be increasing as we move closer to mid week. A upper level low is forecast to drift southwestward from the Carolina’s to around the Florida Panhandle / northeast Gulf. This will produce a west to northwest wind flow over Florida, helping to enhance the east and coast sea breeze convergence and allow widespread thunderstorms each afternoon. This will be very welcome rains to keep this crazy severe drought in control here in Florida.
The weather computer models paint deep tropical moisture being pulled northward out of the Caribbean Sea and over Florida, which will lead to more widespread rains if this was to come true. Even a few of the longer rang models have a tropical like feature trying to spin up and move northward, so I’ll be monitoring the trends on this into the new week.
So, the Florida rainy season has returned, and the tropics will be becoming more active as we move into mid June and early July. This is my favorite time of year! I love the temperatures in the 90’s, with afternoon pulse lightning storms, and summer days monitoring the tropical Atlantic satellite loop sectors for tropical storm development. What are your favorite things weather-wise this time of year?
Have a great start to your new week!
