Lake Okeechobee Heavy Rains Help Florida Drought

Yesterday not only brought funnels over the mainland and water spouts in the Tampa Bay area and Florida Keys, but also brought much needed rainfall over Lake Okeechobee where it is so desperately needed. The Florida drought of 2007 has dropped the lake level to below 9 Feet when it should be around 15 feet this time of year. Nice tropical heavy rains as seen in the picture above moved over the lake for several hours, dumping several inches of rain. In the storm photo above, you can see a nice heavy rain core with a rain-foot feature, along with rain curtains over Lake Okeechobee near Port Mayaca, Florida.
The current tropical wave moving in over Florida today, is expected to bring another 2-3 inches of rain to some lucky locations through Friday night. As of this morning, a large area of heavy to moderate rains were getting ready to move onshore from the Atlantic over South Florida. Planning for some embedded thunderstorms as well later today and would not be surprised to see some more waterspout reports not only from the normal Florida Keys and offshore waters of Florida, but even maybe one or two from Lake Okeechobee waters. It’s good to see the rains have returned and maybe we can get this lake back to it’s normal self by the winter months, and keep all these Florida wildfires from staring again.
I have some video editing to do for a client, but I plan to head out for some lightning and Florida style convection late this afternoon and evening.

Checked the lake level yesterday and it was 8.91. Today it’s at 8.87. Strange being the heavy rain that fell yesterday.
Hey Dave - Yeah I think it’s going to take a lot of days like yesterday to see a big change in water levels. Some of the computer forecast models have some bullseye 2-3 inches in and near the lake through saturday, so maybe we might see some changes after the weekend…one can hope..
This drought thing is a bunch of bull, I heard from a very reliable source that on 6/28/2007 Florida was still letting water out of Lake Okeechobee.
Hmmm could this be because someone is making money hauling the soil rich muck from the bottom of the lake, or they are finding too many treasures?
STOP letting the water out of Lake Okeechobee!
Our lakes in South Florida are now at a normal level!
Gee we mess up at our Jobs and we get fired, not these guys
in florida, the town clown act continues…..
I don’t understand why they don’y close the locks to keep what rain that does fall into the lake there. Eastern West Palm Beach southward to Miami is dealing with training storm echos this morning and have picked up anywhere from 5-9 inches of rain since midnight….and the rain continues to fall.
Moderate Street flooding is taking place already….I’m en route.
Too bad this is not falling over the lake.
Looks like some nice stuff just off the coast there. Enjoy your Friday.
Hey jeff great blog…
The area of the florida coast has been tagged invest 95L but in my opinion significant development seems unlikely.Looks rather wet across most of florida the next few days.Adrian
