Possible home grown tropical activity in the making this morning east of the Bahamas. New Invest 98L up for a area of deep convection that is showing slight signs of possible slow development. Early model guidance brings this system to a tropical storm off the east coast of the United States. Could we be looking at our first hurricane of the season? Tropical Storm or Hurricane Chantal? As of right now, it’s not looking like it will take off fast.
These home grown tropical system can pop up fast on old stalled fronts and tropical waves. Looking at the first few visible satellite loops, you can see some mid-level turning, with a very weak broad low-level turning, if even that. For now, I’m going to just monitor satellite trends throughout the day and will update again later. If it does develop, it should remain offshore the east coast as the trough still remains in place up and down the east coast.
