Lorenzo Now A Hurricane

Hurricane Lorenzo is yet another record breaking storm to go from a Tropical Depression to a category 1 hurricane within 12 hours. Lorenzo being a very small compact storm with a small core, allowed him to rapidly organized once the wind shear in the mid and upper-levels relaxed starting this morning. Lorenzo is packing winds of 75mph and could strengthen even more overnight prior to land falling on the Veracruz Mexican coastline.

Small Tropical Storms Can Ramp Up Fast

Hurricane Humberto a few weeks ago also went from a Depression to a Hurricane within 12 hours. These small cored systems can spin up fairly fast once all the surrounding environmental conditions are in place for strengthening. Hurricane Charley was one of these small compact hurricanes and went from a weak category two once he left Cuba to a strong category 4 within hours and slammed into Southwest Florida. Charley’s eye that I went through in Punta Gorda, FL was only 5 miles in diameter. You have to always keep an eye on those small system, especially when sitting in the Gulf of Mexico.

Dangerous Flooding Rains For Veracruz Mexico

Slow moving Hurricanes can dump 10-15 inches of rain, which can cause dangerous and deadly flash flooding and mud slides in more mountainous locations. Area’s in the Mexican state of Veracruz look to receive the most rainfall totals over the next 48 hours with this small compact hurricane. This area just recently had flooding tropical rains from Hurricane Dean that made his second landfall as a category 2 a last month. This area will likely have significant flooding issues to deal with over the next few days as Hurricane Lorenzo slowly tracks inland.
