Tropical Storm Noel’s Indirect Florida Video Scenes
Update: Noel Now A Hurricane with 75mph Winds
South Florida Beaches Take A Pounding From Noel
Tropical Storm Noel has been slowly drifting off of Southeast Florida for the last 24-48 hours, and this along with high pressure to the north, has created a impressive wind gradient. Tuesday and all day on Halloween, winds were near or at gale force along east coast Florida beaches, and likely stronger offshore. This was creating very large surf from the strong wind fetch, that also was producing severe beach erosion and coastal flooding in some locations.

On Halloween, I toured around coastal Palm Beach County, FL, and came across a lot of beach erosion and flooding during high tide. The ocean was truly violent and I spoke to a few surfer buddies of mine earlier in the day and they said it was too dangerous as the southward moving current was way to strong. Most Florida beaches were closed on Halloween due to the dangerous conditions, but some still managed to get out to surf near the inlets.
Coastal Florida Wind Tidal Flooding
There was a lot of coastal salt water flooding along A1A and parking lots right along the coast from the very high tidal surge during high tide. I couldn’t believe the amount of people driving through this deep “salt” water. That can really mess your car up fast! In the video above, all the scenes with the traffic in water is all salt water flooding. Many were out trying to get a look at the mean ocean and winds, and watch some structure being threatened by the beach erosion and large waves.

Tropical Storm Noel About To Turn Out To Sea
Noel is about at his closest point to the Southeast Florida coastline this morning, and is about to start his north-northeastward track through the central and northern Bahamas later today. On water vapor imagery, you can clearly see the trough digging in and getting ready to shunt Noel northeastward. Today should be the last day of the strong onshore flow along Florida beaches, but the surf is likely to remain elevated for days as Noel goes from Tropical to Extratropical. Most of the model turn Noel into a very western Atlantic extratropical cyclone that could possibly have hurricane force winds once out to sea. This will likely keep a swell up along the eastern United States and Florida.
Noel Weak, But Deadly In Haiti and Damaging In Florida
Noel is the only true threat to Florida this Hurricane season, and even though most of the winds were indirect due to the pressure gradient between Noel and the high pressure, Noel will be remembered this season for the cause of the impressive Florida beach erosion. Also keep in mind all the deadly flash flooding in Haiti and Cuba that has the death toll for Noel near 60 people. Even a weak to moderate tropical storm can be very dangerous and take lives.
