Rain Keeps Meteor Shower Out Of View

poor florida weather for showWell, as you can see in the following picture, my luck with filming the annual Geminid Meteor Shower was clouded over with showers much of the night. I got up around 4:30am et to see if things cleared out enough to get a good view of the sky, but was greeted with rain drops on the roof, and a thick cloud deck. Looking at satellite imagery this morning, it looked like from about Orlando southward was too cloudy for viewing the Space Weather show here in Southern Florida.

I Know, We Need The Rain

Figures this would happen after several weeks of clear skies each night and very dry conditions. I do remember asking for some leftover rains from Tropical Storm Olga, and it looks like the weather gods came through with some overnight. Some locations in Palm Beach County received over 2 inches of rain last night, and some of the drive into the city this morning had scenes of standing water on the roadside. I nice change from the dry conditions the last month. News reports on the radio this morning, reported that water restrictions in South Florida will become even tighter by January 15, 2008. So, I guess I should wait until next year for the meteor shower show, and welcome more rain before this next cold front.

Florida Severe Weather Chance This Weekend?

A potent cold front is expected to plow into the state overnight Saturday, and will be clashing with the warm air and deep moisture that’s currently in place. There is a chance of maybe a few isolated strong storms along the squall line. Even though some of the best upper-level wind dynamics will be pulling away to the north, there will still be some energy to work with, so it might be worth staying up late Saturday night. More on this later.

Update: A ton of heavy rainfall has fallen over many locations in and around Lake Okeechobee. Some reports of 2-5 inches since this morning, which is excellent news for the drought. More on this in tomorrows post.
