Update: 3:50pm ET: Tornado Outbreak Underway

Mississippi and Alabama are dealing with ongoing damaging tornadoes at this time. The latest has shifted to this post, and the archives of the develop system are below. Tornado Outbreak Coverage Now

Early Afternoon Update: 11:31am ET -Tornado Risk Increased

Looks like the atmosphere is becoming more destabilized with heating of the day and more significant wind profiles developing over the Deep South. The slight risk has now been upgraded to a moderate risk of a few damaging tornadoes later this afternoon. I’ll be posting a new post entry for the storms once they get going in a few hours, and will be posting nowcasting, and Storm Chaser updates from the field, along with any damage or tornado reports.

Possible Deep South Supercell Storms Later Today

Tornado Outlook Day 1 SPC 1/10/08Moving into January 10th today, and more severe storms, with possible tornadoes on tap for today in Mississippi, Alabama and along the northern Gulf coast. Another upper-level disturbance will be moving into the Deep South later today, setting the stage for more winter time severe weather. The Storm Prediction Center has the area out looked for a slight risk and 10% tornado possibilities. There is actually very impressive wind shear profiles over the Deep South this morning, but the main limiting factor if we can get storms to develop or not, is the heavy low clouds in place. If the clouds break up more than expected and better heating takes place, the Supercell and tornado threat will increase, so it’s a wait and see game for those in Mississippi, Alabama and other portions of the South later this afternoon and evening. Monitor your weather today for those in Jackson, MS and Montgomery, AL & Surrounding Area’s of the South.

PRESENT INDICATIONS ARE THAT THESE STORMS WILL LIKELY INCLUDE SCATTERED SUPERCELLS CAPABLE OF TORNADOES AND DAMAGING WINDS. MODEL GUIDANCE SUGGESTS THAT EXTENSIVE LOW CLOUDS WILL LIMIT DAYTIME HEATING AND DESTABILIZATION. HOWEVER…IF BREAKS IN THE CLOUDS CAN DEVELOP…AN UPGRADE TO MODERATE RISK COULD BE REQUIRED DUE TO STRONG NATURE OF THE SHEAR PROFILES.

Another Chance Of Storms Saturday In Florida

Vis satellite of Deep South 1/10/08Over the last few days I have been posting about a possible surface low developing in the Gulf of Mexico, and this looks like it might be the case this weekend as model trends continue to develop. Already out looked in a “See Text”, but could be upgraded by the weekend to a slight risk. Once again it will all be about the instability and forcing, as plenty of moisture will already be in place. More on this tomorrow and on Saturday as the atmosphere setup comes into better view.

For now, I won’t be chasing in the Deep South, but I’ll be arm chasing here at the computers and tuning into any Chasers that are out on the road today. More to come!
