Mobile Update: 4:01pm ET - Central Florida Tornado Watch Issued

Now going to get into position for this evenings expected storms that will be more associated with the squall line and cluster of thunderstorms moving in and developing over the eastern Gulf. New Tornado Watch issued for all of central Florida until 11pm local. Looks like it could be a active evening.

Mobile Update: 12:44pm ET - Monitoring Visible Satellite Trends

I’m becoming more interested in the convergence that is more evident south and east of Lake Okeechobee now on 1km visible satellite imagery loops. Early this morning I thought I would chase up in central Florida, but all the winds look very unidirectional and the only decent surface convergence is along the pre-frontal squall line, which is way up near Ocala. FL Further south into deep south Florida, excellent heating is taking place, and the surface winds are a little more southerly than out of the southwest. Along the extreme southeast coast, some observations are reporting southeast winds behind a pinched sea breeze right along the I-95 corridor.

This sea breeze might push another few miles inland with heating of the day fighting the mean flow, but increasing convergence and shear right along the coast. I think I’m going to head in this direction for this afternoon and worry about the squall line stuff tonight.

Morning Dew Spider Web Scenes

Spider-web in morning dew FLorida 2008Waking up to a very foggy and humid morning here in South-central Florida. The weather station reads a juicy dew point temperature of 72.1F and it’s very misty outside with the fog. I went out into the front lawn at sunrise and shot some video of all the spider webs covered in morning dew backlit by sunlight. Dewdrop would appreciate a morning like this I’m sure. All this deep tropical moisture in place will come into play later this afternoon and evening, in the development of thunderstorms.

Storm Chasing Florida Storms This Afternoon

A potent squall line is currently moving through the Deep South in Alabama and Georgia. Later this afternoon, additional thunderstorms are forecast to develop out ahead of the line of storms in north and central Florida. Some of these storms more discrete in nature, could become severe. This is where my focus is for today, and I plan to depart for the region within the hour. Thunderstorms have a better chance of becoming Supercellular ahead of the pre-frontal boundary in better heating and moisture. This is my option for today and I’m going to take it. I will try and update from the road once winds get more interesting, but until then I must go pack up and get some breakfast before heading out.

I can see spring on the horizon….get ready!
