Chasing Leftover Florida Squall Line Storms Today

Late Evening Update: 9:45pm ET
I ended up intercepting a nice little storm over South-central Florida and chased it all the way to the east coast in Stuart, FL. Captured some nice lightning, storm structure and time lapse on video and hope to get some of the images up for tomorrow mornings post. Now time to hit the sack after 175 miles on the road this afternoon.
Mobile Update: 10:51am ET - Monitoring Visible Satellite Loops
I’m currently in Arcadia, Florida standing by and looking over some data. Monitoring the convective activity west of Tampa at this time. Surface winds are steady out of the SSE still here under full sun, so hoping for some pre-frontal action by early afternoon. Don’t think I’m going to move from here until I see either something more impressive on 1km satellite with isolated development ahead of the line, or the ongoing strong embedded cell west of Bradenton / Sarasota, FL moves ashore in the next few hours.
Less Rotation More Linear Storms On Monday
Mondays severe weather over the Deep South region luckily turned out to be much less intense than first thought, and tornadoes were almost nil. There were a few reports of some short-live spin-ups, but most of the severe weather reports consisted of straight-line wind damage and large hail associated with the squall line. Overnight the squall line has been tracking eastward along the I-10 corridor and southern states, but the strongest storms remained over the warm Gulf of Mexico waters south of the Florida Panhandle.
Leftovers Storms In Florida With Weaker Wind Fields Today
Later this afternoon some of these storms are expected to move ashore the Florida west-central coast and Big Bend area’s, and I plan to be out there shooting video much of the day. I’m not only shooting for myself today, but also for a Florida client as well. The southerly wind flow is still well established over Florida, so hoping for convergence to hold some over the state to keep some of the general thunderstorms going as they cross the state today. I will be departing shortly for Bradenton to Tarpon Springs and work eastward throughout the day with the line and any isolated convection. It’s March and time to get out of the backyard chase mode and hit the road.
This time last year I was blogging about Florida drought, wildfire video and high pressure ridging over the Deep South and Florida. It’s much nicer to have the opportunity to chase even linear storms than sit under a smoke filled March sky wishing just for some showers. It should be a enjoyable afternoon for this Florida Storm Chaser just to get out and geek it up with the weather. I’ll try and update from the road later today if I find the time to log on.
