Tight Pressure Gradient Causing Very Windy Florida Conditions
Wild windy day here in Florida. Much of the day the winds have been sustained in the mid to upper 20’s, with some gusting over 45mph. There have been stronger winds at times recorded at weather stations around the state. Some readings ranging from 49mph in the Orlando area, to 51mph up along the Space Coast. The entire state is feeling the tight pressure gradient behind the exiting (993mb) low pressure system that brought all the severe weather and heavy rains to Florida on Friday. The winds should continue through the remainder of the day, and begin to lighten up after sunset as high pressure begins to move into the area and the low pressure area continues northeast through the Mid-Atlantic states.
Here are some of the latest recorded wind reports around the Florida Peninsula These are all “Non-Thunderstorm Wind Gusts”:
- DAYTONA BEACH 41mph
- CAPE CANAVERAL 45mph
- SANFORD 43mph
- ORMOND BEACH 40mph
- MYAKKA CITY 49mph
- FLAGLER BEACH 39mph
- DOWNTOWN JACKSONVILLE 48mph
- KENNEDY SPACE CENTER 51mph
- Florida Keys / LONG KEY 47mph
I will add to this list as more are posted throughout the day. Reports of non-thunderstorm wind damage also have been coming in from as far north as Valdosta Georgia, to South Florida. Tree’s knocked over, power lines down and power out in Central Florida, and even some coastal flooding on the Gulf coast with the strong onshore flow. Even this morning on my way to Home Depot, I saw someone’s patio set blown off their deck and out into the main road. Here on the north end of Lake Okeechobee, it’s been very windy. I have recorded sustained winds in the mid 20’s all day with gusts in the mid to upper 30’s, and I’m sheltered some, so I can imagine the winds are much stronger out on the Lake and open fields.
